Below are many of the carved heads I have created and which are available to purchase.
The process can be slow but I thought it would be interesting to make a time-lapse video of one of the smaller carvings.
The head is carved out of Lilac wood and the hair is made from red wool.

SURF'S UP DUDE

Surf's Up Dude is one in a series of carved heads in which I use the colour and grain of domestic woods and natural fibre rope to reveal the subtle personality of the character portrayed. The wood is a slightly "spalted" section from a walnut tree felled locally by the town's arbourist Charles

NICE HAIR, DUDE

Nice Hair, Dude is another in a series of carved heads in which I use the colour and grain of domestic woods and natural fibre rope to reveal the subtle personality of the character portrayed. Nice Hair Dude was carefully crafted from a piece of an old Spruce tree that grew in my own backyard.

HAVIN' MORE FUN

Havin' More Fun is another in a series of carved heads in which I use the colour and grain of domestic woods and natural fibre rope to reveal the subtle personality of the character portrayed. Havin' More Fun was carved from a beautiful piece of Russian Olive felled by a good friend on a nearby farm.

SKIP
Skip is a new divergence from my usual cast of characters. I call this a "Good day/Bad day" head since you can display the side of the head that represents how you are feeling on any particular day. Skip was carved from a piece of Manitoba Maple harvested in my own back yard. His unusual hair, giving him that "Curling Bonspiel" look, comes from a natural fibre broom.
Size - 7 in dia by 15 in tall

RAIN MAN

SPARKIE

Sparkie took me in a different direction with regards to "what I could use as hair". Having enjoyed the success with using broom bristles, I chose bare copper wire for the next subject.
Sparkie's head was carved from a piece of Caribbean Mahogany that had been waiting to become something for years and seemed to be a perfect candidate for a copper hairdo.... Size - 5 in by 8 in tall Price - $250 (SOLD) |
LIL SKIP
Lil Skip is another Good day/Bad day head, like his big brother Skip, and is ready to let people know "is this is a good time to talk?".
Lil Skip was carved from another piece of that Caribbean Mahogany just waiting to be reincarnated, and again, hair courtesy of a natural bristle broom.

LITTLE HEADS
This assortment of little heads is just a sampling of the small caricatures I carve from virtually any piece of wood I find lying around.
Some have goofy smiling faces, others have sad or angry faces and some have both, like my larger Good day/Bad day heads.
Originally carved to be used as zipper toggles, most people want the heads mounted on a small plinth of some sort to sit quietly in the corner and keep them company.
