A series of pieces in which I use the colour and grain of domestic and exotic woods to highlight the natural movement in a tree's growth.
Originally designed to showcase the smaller 'heads' that I made to be zipper pulls, they are now an art form of their own.

MEDIEVAL MAPLE UNZIPPED

Medieval Maple Unzipped is the introductory piece in a new series of zippers I am creating. In this series I incorporate the centuries old art of blacksmithing with the natural movement in a tree's growth to produce pieces with a unique combination of timeless ruggedness and organic beauty.
Medieval Maple Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of an ancient silver maple tree grown in the Schomberg area. BLACK CHERRY WALNUT UNZIPPED

Black Cherry & Walnut Unzipped is one in a series of pieces that will use the colour and grain of domestic and exotic woods to highlight the natural movement in a tree’s growth.
Black Cherry & Walnut Unzipped was made primarily from a section of a Black Cherry tree that grew just down the street. The teeth were fashioned from walnut that was repurposed from house being built. Some “distressing” was added to the teeth and zipper hardware to give the piece a hammered-steel look. PURPLE WALNUT UNZIPPED

$175Purple Walnut Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of an old Walnut tree grown in the Schomberg area, with teeth fashioned from Purpleheart wood, a tree found in Latin and South America, the beautiful purple is the wood's natural colour.

EXOTIC CHERRY UNZIPPED

Exotic Cherry Unzipped is one in a series of pieces that will use the colour and grain of domestic and exotic woods to highlight the natural movement in a tree’s growth.
Exotic Cherry Unzipped was made primarily from a section of a Black Cherry tree that grew just down the road from my studio. The teeth were fashioned from Ebony, a virtually black and incredibly dense wood found in Africa, and the pull was made using both ebony and some red-coloured Bubinga from Central America. Holly & Cherry Unzipped is another in a series of pieces in which I use the colour and grain of domestic and exotic woods to highlight the natural movement in a tree’s growth.
Holly & Cherry Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of an Cherry tree grown in the Schomberg area, with teeth fashioned from Holly, a tree found all over North America – the incredible white is the wood’s natural colour it is considered the “whitest” wood known to exist. (Cherry Cabriuva Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of a cherry tree grown in the Schomberg area, with teeth and zipper pull fashioned from Red Cabriuva wood, a tree found in South America, the beautiful red is the wood's natural colour.

THE ORIGINAL WOODEN ZIPPER

My first zipper was made from two slices of a locally grown beech tree with zipper teeth and pull carved out of Mahogany. This first zipper was built as a means to show off the little heads that I carved and used as zipper pulls on heavy winter coats. As soon as I showed my friends the zipper and the little head zipper pull, the comments were nearly all concerning the neat zipper - nothing about the zipper head.
I made another and donated it to the Arts Society King Summer festival - the response was overwhelming in support for the idea and so my diversion into wooden zippers began. (NOT FOR SALE) |
SPALTED BIRCH AND WALNUT UNZIPPED

Spalted Birch and Walnut Unzipped was made from a wonderful piece of spalted Birch taken from a fallen tree on Schomberg's Main Street, decorated with local Walnut teeth and Peruvian Walnut zipper pull and tab.

FANCY APPLE UNZIPPED

Fancy Apple Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of an Apple tree from Schomberg's Main Street, adorned with teeth made of Bocote, a tree from Latin and South America, and the zipper pull made from Canary wood from Brazil.

BIRCH AND BERRIES UNZIPPED

Birch and Berries Unzipped was made primarily from a section of Birch tree that grew by our cottage in Tobermory, Ontario, until a strong wind sealed its fate. The teeth are fashioned from Chakte Kok, a tree native to Central America. The vivid red is the natural colour of the wood.

Magnolia Unzipped was made primarily from a section of Magnolia tree growing in Owen Sound, Ontario, with teeth fashioned from Bacote, a tree native to Central America. The orange is the natural colour of the wood.

Ancient Friends Unzipped was made primarily from a section of one of the oldest ancient Maples on Schomberg's Main Street. The teeth and zipper pull were fashioned from some old white oak reclaimed from on of Schomberg's early homes.

PriA Little Wine with An Old Friend Unzipped was made primarily from two slices of walnut, that wonderful treasure to woodworkers since the beginning of time, cut from a tree grown in the Schomberg area. The wine coloured teeth were fashioned from Purpleheart, a tree found in Latin and South America - the beautiful purple is the woods natural colour.
